Time Doctor Alternatives (2026): 11 Tools by Why You Are Leaving

A Time Doctor alternative is any tool that covers what Time Doctor was doing for you without the part you object to. For most teams that part is one of three: screenshots that cannot be switched off on any plan, a realistic price of $11.70 per user for the Standard plan most teams need, or a cancellation process that, according to the largest cluster of its public reviews, keeps billing. Hubstaff keeps proof of work and makes screenshots optional. Clockify covers attendance and approvals at $5.49 with no screenshots. Toggl Track and Everhour never monitor. Apploye matches the feature list for a third of the price. Insightful and WorkTime fix the short data history.

The pages ranking for this search are written by Toggl, Time Champ and Time Doctor itself, each ranking its own product first, and one of them carries a 2026 title on a 2024 article. This guide starts from the reasons people leave, with dated quotes, gives October 2026 pricing for every tool with add-ons and minimums, marks each tool's monitoring level, and ends with a cancellation checklist. There are no vendor links and nothing paid for its place.

The short answer

If mandatory screenshots are the problem, Hubstaff makes them optional and blurrable, Clockify and DeskTime leave them off their standard plans, and Toggl Track and Everhour never take them.

If the price is the problem, the realistic Time Doctor plan is Standard at $11.70. Hubstaff Grow at $7.50, Clockify Standard at $5.49 and Time Champ Starter at $3.90 cover attendance, approvals and reports for less.

If billing and cancellation are the problem, which is what most of Time Doctor's public complaints are about, choose a tool with month-to-month billing and a published cancellation path: Clockify, Toggl Track, Hubstaff (30-day money-back) or Apploye.

What Time Doctor costs and does in October 2026

Time Doctor

Time Doctor

The incumbent
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, Android, Chrome Pricing (October 2026) Basic $6.70, Standard $11.70, Premium $16.70 per user per month billed annually ($8, $14, $20 monthly; annual billing gives two months free); Enterprise by quote; 14-day trial of Premium; add-ons: Software Cost Insights $3 per user, HRIS and payroll integrations $200 per integration per month Monitoring Full monitoring

What it is

Time Doctor is a time tracker built around proof of work. Screenshots are on every plan, including Basic. Standard adds attendance and schedules, time approvals, web and app usage reports, productivity ratings, leave and break tracking, payroll, real-time notifications and 60 or more integrations. Premium adds video screen recording, mouse-jiggler and irregular-keyboard detection, an unusual-activity report, an executive dashboard, SSO, an open API and a client login. Data history is three months on Basic, six on Standard and two years on Premium. In 2026 it added an AI benchmarks report and an MCP connector.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Video recording and anomaly detection on Premium, the deepest evidence layer in this group
  • Attendance, schedules, approvals and payroll on Standard
  • Linux and Chromebook agents

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • Screenshots cannot be removed from any plan
  • The plan most teams need is Standard at $11.70, not the $6.70 headline
  • Data history is only three months on Basic
  • Trustpilot score of 1.2 of 5 across 235 reviews, concentrated on billing after cancellation and refused refunds

Who should switch to it

Outsourcing firms and BPOs whose client contracts require screen evidence, and who have a clean cancellation process in writing. Our employee monitoring software review places it among its peers.

On October 21, 2026 Time Doctor's pricing page served plan names and features but no dollar figures to automated requests; the prices above were read from the same page earlier in October 2026 for our time tracking review and match the third-party trackers. Confirm on the live page.

Why people leave Time Doctor

Time Doctor's public reviews split sharply: the software review sites are positive, the consumer review site is not. The complaints below are the ones with evidence, each with a fix.

Billing continues after cancellation

The single largest cluster of one-star reviews on Trustpilot describes accounts that were canceled but kept charging, and refund requests refused. Time Doctor replied to 42% of negative reviews there.

I've asked to cancel my membership multiple times and am still being charged.Trustpilot, one star, December 16, 2025

Fixed by: month-to-month plans with in-app cancellation and a money-back window: Hubstaff (30 days), Apploye (30 days), Clockify (downgrade to free at any time).

Screenshots on every plan

There is no Time Doctor plan without screenshots, and Premium adds continuous video. Teams that only needed timesheets and attendance end up with surveillance they did not ask for and employees who resent it.

Fixed by: Hubstaff (optional, blurrable), Clockify and DeskTime (off on standard plans), Toggl Track and Everhour (never).

Tracking that starts on its own

Reviewers describe the desktop app recording activity without the timer being started, which is a product behavior on some configurations and a trust failure on every one.

Automatically tracked my activities without me turning it on!Trustpilot, one star, August 5, 2025

Fixed by: tools where tracking is visibly started by the user: Toggl Track, Clockify, Everhour.

The realistic price

Attendance, approvals, web and app reports and payroll are on Standard at $11.70 per user, which puts a 20-person team at $234 a month before the $200-per-integration payroll add-on.

Fixed by: Hubstaff Grow $7.50, Clockify Standard $5.49, Time Champ Starter $3.90, Apploye Elite $4.50.

Crashes and a confusing app

Reviews across platforms mention silent crashes, a dated interface and settings spread across menus. A tracker that crashes silently costs the employee the hours and the manager the dispute.

The product itself is buggy and confusing.Trustpilot, one star, updated August 27, 2026

Fixed by: lighter clients with simpler models: DeskTime, Toggl Track, Jibble.

Short data history

Three months of history on Basic and six on Standard means last quarter's comparison disappears unless you pay for Premium.

Fixed by: Insightful (24 months), ActivTrak (6 to 12 months, extendable), WorkTime (unlimited on paid plans).

Which alternative fits

Tools that cannot do what you still need drop out of the top three.

The alternatives in detail

Hubstaff

Hubstaff

Proof of work with screenshots optional
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, iOS, Android, browser extensions Pricing (October 2026) Starter $4.99, Grow $7.50, Team $10, Enterprise $25 per seat per month billed annually ($7, $9, $12 monthly); 2-seat minimum; 14-day trial; 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans

What it is

Hubstaff is the closest like-for-like replacement: time against projects, activity levels, app and URL tracking, optional screenshots that can be blurred or switched off per project, GPS and job sites on mobile, and payroll, invoicing and scheduling on the higher plans. Idle detection and the activity score work the same way as Time Doctor's, so read our Hubstaff alternatives page before assuming the complaints go away.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Screenshots can be turned off, blurred or reduced per project
  • Monthly billing, in-app cancellation and a 30-day money-back guarantee
  • GPS job sites and a free Project Viewer role

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • No video recording or anomaly detection
  • The activity score invites the same disputes as Time Doctor's productivity ratings
  • 2-seat minimum and per-seat billing for anyone who logs in

Who should switch to it

Teams that still need some proof of work for clients but want to decide where screenshots apply and to be able to leave without a fight.

Switching

Export Time Doctor's time and reports to CSV before the subscription ends; Hubstaff imports projects and members from CSV and starts time fresh.

Clockify

Clockify

Attendance and approvals without screenshots
Runs on Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, kiosk Pricing (October 2026) Free for 5 users with 31-day reports; Basic $3.99, Standard $5.49, Pro $7.99, Enterprise $11.99 per seat per month billed annually ($4.99, $6.99, $9.99, $14.99 monthly); 7-day Pro trial

What it is

Clockify covers the Standard-plan use of Time Doctor, attendance, overtime, time off, approvals and invoicing, at $5.49, without screenshots. Activity monitoring is an opt-in Pro feature and there are no images at any tier. Billing is monthly or annual, and canceling means dropping to the free plan with data intact.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Less than half the price of Time Doctor Standard for the same attendance and approval features
  • No screenshots and no scoring unless you turn on Pro monitoring
  • Cancel to free at any time; no refunds dispute because there is nothing to refund on monthly

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • No proof of work for clients who insist on screen evidence
  • GPS only on Pro and no geofencing
  • Free plan cut back in April 2026, so budget for Basic or Standard

Who should switch to it

Teams that used Time Doctor for timesheets, attendance and payroll exports and never needed the screenshots.

Switching

Clockify imports time entries from CSV with email, project, description, start date, start time and duration columns.

Toggl Track

Toggl Track

No monitoring of any kind
Runs on Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, browser extensions Pricing (October 2026) Free for 3 users on new accounts; Starter $9 and Premium $16 per user per month billed annually ($12 and $24 monthly); 30-day trial

What it is

Toggl Track's pricing FAQ states that it does not monitor employees, take screenshots or record keystrokes, browsing or location. It tracks time against projects and clients with billable rates, team reports on Starter and approvals, labor cost and profitability on Premium. It is the choice when monitoring itself was the problem.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Nothing to object to: no screenshots, no activity score, no silent tracking
  • Highest adoption of any tracker here
  • Month-to-month billing

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • No attendance, GPS, kiosk or payroll
  • Costs more than Time Doctor Basic once you need approvals
  • No proof of work at all, for clients who require it

Who should switch to it

Agencies and knowledge-work teams where Time Doctor's screenshots and ratings damaged trust and the business bills by project rather than by evidenced hour.

Switching

Import Time Doctor's CSV export through Toggl's universal importer, mapping projects and members first.

Insightful

Insightful

Analytics with long retention
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux Pricing (October 2026) Workforce Analytics $8 and Combo $16 per seat per month billed annually; add-ons per seat: on-demand screenshots $4, higher-frequency screenshots $3, screen recording $4; 7-day trial; 24 months of data on listed plans

What it is

Insightful records app and website use, activity and screenshots with per-team controls, time and attendance, projects and manual time, with payroll on Combo. It keeps 24 months of history against Time Doctor's three to six on the lower plans, and offers a Linux agent and an on-premises option from 250 seats.

Better than Time Doctor

  • 24 months of history on every listed plan
  • Screenshots configurable per team; screen recording is a $4 add-on rather than a plan feature
  • Workforce analytics on capacity and utilization

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • No mobile app or GPS
  • Add-ons raise the $8 entry quickly
  • Stealth mode and seat counting draw the same trust complaints as Time Doctor

Who should switch to it

Office teams that want evidence and analytics with control over who is screenshotted, and that need more than six months of history.

Switching

Insightful has an API and CSV reports but no Time Doctor importer; overlap one period and reconcile.

ActivTrak

ActivTrak

Analytics without images
Runs on Windows, macOS, Chromebook Pricing (October 2026) Free for 3 users with 30 days of history; Work Activity Tracking $10, Workforce Management $15, Productivity Optimization $17, Workflow $21 per user per month on annual contracts; screenshots only via the Screen Details add-on

What it is

ActivTrak classifies application and website use and reports utilization, focus, schedule adherence and workload balance without screenshots on its standard plans. It is an analytics product rather than a time tracker, so there is no project billing, GPS or payroll.

Better than Time Doctor

  • No screenshots on the plans most buyers choose
  • Burnout and workload signals that Time Doctor does not attempt
  • Free plan for three people

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • Annual contracts only; no monthly billing
  • No Linux agent, no project time, no payroll
  • Entry plan costs more than Time Doctor Basic

Who should switch to it

Office and hybrid teams that used Time Doctor for visibility rather than billing and want to drop the images.

Switching

Not a time tracker, so project hours need another home; ActivTrak exports through its ActivConnect add-on.

DeskTime

DeskTime

Automatic tracking, lighter agent
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Pricing (October 2026) Free Lite for one user; Pro $6.42 and Premium $9.17 per user per month billed annually ($7 and $10 monthly); 14-day trial

What it is

DeskTime starts with the computer, classifies apps and sites by productivity, offers a private time button, and keeps screenshots, shift scheduling and the API on Premium. It handles absence and shifts for office teams and is repeatedly described as a lighter agent than Time Doctor's.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Screenshots are Premium-only rather than universal
  • Private time built in
  • Simpler client with fewer settings to misconfigure

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • No GPS, payroll or invoicing
  • No project budgets or client billing
  • Prices displayed in local currency on the vendor site

Who should switch to it

Office teams that want automatic capture with a quieter agent and screenshots off by default.

Switching

No importer; start at a pay-period boundary and archive Time Doctor reports.

Everhour

Everhour

Time inside the project tool
Runs on Web and browser extension inside Asana, Jira, ClickUp, monday, Trello, GitHub, Notion; iOS Pricing (October 2026) Free for up to 5 users without integrations; Team $8.50 per seat per month billed annually with a 5-seat minimum; 14-day trial; unused annual months are not refunded

What it is

Everhour adds a timer, estimates and budgets to tasks inside your project tool, with reports, invoicing and approvals on Team. No agent, no screenshots, no scoring.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Budgets visible where the work happens
  • No monitoring of any kind
  • Invoicing included in the one paid tier

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • Needs a supported project tool
  • 5-seat minimum and no refunds on annual
  • No attendance, GPS or payroll

Who should switch to it

Project teams in Asana, Jira or ClickUp that were using Time Doctor for project hours.

Switching

Historical time stays in Time Doctor's exports; map projects to tasks first.

Apploye

Apploye

Time Doctor's feature set for a third of the price
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome, iOS, Android Pricing (October 2026) Starter free for up to 10 users with limits; Elite $4.50 per user per month annual ($7 monthly) with screenshots at 18 per hour; Power $8 annual ($12 monthly) with 60 per hour, real-time capture and stealth mode; stealth $2 add-on on Elite; on-premises $3 per user from 100 users; 10-day trial; 30-day refund

What it is

Apploye tracks time with screenshots, app and URL usage, activity levels, GPS on mobile, projects and budgets, payroll and invoicing, and offers stealth mode on its higher plan. It is the closest match to Time Doctor's feature list at a fraction of the price, with Linux and mobile agents and a published refund policy.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Screenshots and activity at $4.50, against Time Doctor's $6.70 with far less included
  • Linux, Chrome and mobile agents; on-premises option
  • No cancellation fee and a 30-day refund window

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • A smaller vendor with a shorter track record
  • Data history of six months on Elite and twelve on Power
  • Stealth mode raises the same ethical and legal questions as Insightful's

Who should switch to it

Outsourcing teams that need the Time Doctor feature set, including screenshots, and want it cheaper with a vendor that publishes its refund terms.

Switching

Apploye imports members and projects from CSV; run it alongside Time Doctor for one cycle.

Time Champ

Time Champ

Attendance plus configurable monitoring
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Pricing (October 2026) Starter $3.90, Professional $6.90, Enterprise $13.90 per user per month billed annually; screen recording, keylogger, project management, HR and DLP as add-ons; trial without a card

What it is

Time Champ records automatic attendance and productivity classification, with screenshots configurable per team and shifts and leave on the same platform, at the lowest paid price in this group.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Starter at $3.90 against Time Doctor's $6.70
  • Screenshot policy set per team rather than universal
  • Attendance, shifts and leave included

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • Shorter enterprise track record
  • Payroll and invoicing need add-ons
  • GPS through the mobile app only

Who should switch to it

Small and mid-sized teams that want attendance and productivity classification and control over screenshots, for less.

Switching

CSV import for users and projects; historical time is not imported.

WorkTime

WorkTime

Monitoring with no images at all
Runs on Windows, macOS, terminal and Citrix servers Pricing (October 2026) Free for 3 employees with two weeks of history; Basic $5.83, Premium $7.49, Enterprise $9.16 per employee per month billed annually ($6.99, $8.99, $10.99 monthly); unlimited history on paid plans; HIPAA, GLBA and GDPR modes on Enterprise

What it is

WorkTime monitors application and website use, attendance and idle time and records no screenshots by design. A keystroke counter on Premium is off by default. It is built for regulated environments and offers private cloud and on-premises deployment.

Better than Time Doctor

  • No images recorded, which is simpler to explain to a regulator and a team
  • Unlimited data history on paid plans
  • Compliance modes and on-premises

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • No Linux agent, no mobile app, no GPS
  • No project billing or payroll
  • Reports are less visual than Time Doctor's

Who should switch to it

Healthcare, finance and other regulated employers leaving Time Doctor over screenshots and retention.

Switching

No importer; WorkTime starts clean and keeps everything from day one.

Jibble

Jibble

A free time clock
Runs on Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, kiosk Pricing (October 2026) Free for unlimited users with mobile and web clock-in, desktop tracking, timesheets, GPS stamps and a facial recognition kiosk; paid tiers quoted rather than published

What it is

Jibble is attendance: clock in by phone, browser or kiosk with GPS and face recognition, overtime and break rules, schedules and approvals, exports to QuickBooks and Xero. Screenshot tracking exists as a paid option but the product is a time clock.

Better than Time Doctor

  • Free for unlimited users
  • Facial recognition kiosk and geofencing
  • Overtime and paid-break rules

Where Time Doctor is still better

  • Paid pricing not published
  • No proof of work for clients
  • No project budgets or invoicing depth

Who should switch to it

Teams that opened Time Doctor for attendance and never used the rest.

Switching

Import employees from CSV; start at a pay-period boundary.

How to leave Time Doctor cleanly

  1. Export first. Download timesheets, projects and the reports a client might ask for before the renewal date; data history on Basic is only three months, so what is not exported is gone.
  2. Cancel inside the account and keep the confirmation. Time Doctor's public complaints concentrate on charges after cancellation. Screenshot the cancellation page, note the date, and check the card statement for two cycles.
  3. Remove the agent from every machine. Uninstalling the client is separate from canceling the account; an installed agent on a former employee's laptop is a data problem.
  4. Issue the monitoring notice for the new tool. If the replacement records anything, employees in Connecticut, Delaware and New York must receive written notice first; the wording is in our monitoring policy template.
  5. Overlap one pay period. Every alternative here offers a trial of 7 to 30 days; run both and reconcile hours before payroll.

How these tools were chosen

Each tool was checked on October 21, 2026 against the same list: what it records and whether screenshots can be turned off, platforms, published pricing with add-ons and minimums, data history, billing terms and cancellation path, and whether Time Doctor's data can be moved into it. Complaints come from public review platforms and vendor documentation; the quotes are from Trustpilot reviews with dates shown. G2 and Capterra ratings are not quoted because their pages could not be read for this article. No vendor paid for placement and there are no affiliate links.

Disclosure. I have done work for Time Champ. It appears here because it belongs in this category, it is held to the same criteria as every other product, and its drawbacks are listed like everyone else's.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Time Doctor?

Hubstaff if you still need proof of work but want screenshots optional and a published money-back policy. Clockify if you need attendance, approvals and invoicing without screenshots at under half the price. Toggl Track if monitoring itself damaged the team. Apploye if you want Time Doctor's feature list for a third of the price. The chooser above ranks them against your reason for leaving.

Is there a free alternative to Time Doctor?

Jibble is free for unlimited users as a time clock with GPS and a kiosk. Clockify is free for 5 users, Toggl Track for 3, ActivTrak for 3 with 30 days of history, Apploye for 10 with limits, and WorkTime for 3 with two weeks of history. None of the free plans includes screenshots.

Does Time Doctor have a free trial?

Yes, 14 days with all Premium features, per its pricing page. There is no permanent free plan. Annual billing gives two months free, a 16.6% discount.

Which alternatives do not take screenshots?

Toggl Track, Everhour and WorkTime never do. Clockify, DeskTime and ActivTrak do not on their standard plans. Hubstaff, Insightful, Time Champ and Apploye take them but let you switch them off or configure them per team.

What is the cheapest alternative with screenshots?

Time Champ Starter at $3.90 and Apploye Elite at $4.50 per user per month on annual billing, followed by Hubstaff Starter at $4.99. Time Doctor Basic is $6.70.

How do I cancel Time Doctor?

From the billing settings inside the account, not by email. Keep a screenshot of the confirmation and the date, remove the desktop agent from every machine, and check your card statement for the next two cycles, because the largest group of Time Doctor's negative public reviews describes charges continuing after cancellation.

Can I export my Time Doctor data?

Reports and timesheets export to CSV from the web app. Do it before the subscription ends: data history is three months on Basic and six on Standard, and reports stop when the plan does. Clockify, Toggl Track, Hubstaff and Apploye import CSV members and projects; most import time entries only with a paid plan or trial.

Which alternative keeps data longest?

Insightful keeps 24 months on its listed plans and WorkTime keeps unlimited history on paid plans. ActivTrak keeps six months to a year, extendable to three years at $1 per user per month per year. Time Doctor keeps three months on Basic, six on Standard and two years on Premium.
