Teramind Alternatives (2026): 12 Tools From DLP to Light Monitoring

Teramind is two products in one agent: a forensic platform that records screens, keystrokes, email and file movement and blocks data loss in real time, and an employee monitoring dashboard that reports productivity. People leave for reasons that point in opposite directions. Security teams leave for a vendor with better support or broader DLP coverage; everyone else leaves because they bought the forensic platform to see who was working, found the agent heavy and the support slow, and never configured a DLP rule.

This guide sorts the alternatives by that split, with dated quotes for the reasons people give, October 2026 pricing where vendors publish it and a clear mark where they do not. Veriato, Syteca, DTEX, Forcepoint and Microsoft Purview replace the security platform; Controlio, CurrentWare and Kickidler replace the recording and blocking for a fraction of the price; ActivTrak, Insightful and Hubstaff replace the dashboard with far less capture and far less legal exposure.

The short answer

If you need insider risk and data loss prevention at Teramind's depth, the like-for-like choices are Veriato ($18, five-seat minimum), Syteca, DTEX and Forcepoint by quote, and Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management if you already own Microsoft 365 E5.

If you bought Teramind for monitoring and never used the DLP rules, Controlio ($6.67), CurrentWare ($12 to $20) and Kickidler record screens and block sites for a third of the price, and ActivTrak ($10) and Insightful ($8) give the analytics without recording.

If the agent's weight and the support queue are the problem, which is what Teramind's public complaints are about, Insightful, ActivTrak and Hubstaff run lighter agents with US support hours.

What Teramind costs and does in October 2026

Teramind

Teramind

The incumbent
Runs on Windows, macOS; cloud or self-hosted; virtual desktop and terminal server support Pricing (October 2026) Starter from about $14 per seat per month on annual billing (about $15 monthly), UAM and DLP tiers higher, Enterprise and Government by quote; the seat selector starts at 5; annual billing saves about 8%; free trial of unspecified length; on October 28, 2026 the pricing page rendered its dollar figures as placeholders to automated requests, so confirm every number on the live page Monitoring Full monitoring

What it is

Teramind is an insider threat and data loss prevention platform that also sells as employee monitoring. Every plan records the screen with live view and playback on policy breaches, tracks applications, websites, files, email and printing, and reports productivity. UAM adds keystroke logging, recording of AI chat conversations and SIEM integration; DLP adds content rules, 200 prepackaged policies, automatic blocking and OCR; Enterprise adds AWS GovCloud and Azure Government hosting and an SLA. Keystroke logging is a feature administrators can turn off, which the vendor describes as invasive. A 2026 release added native monitoring of Windows desktop apps and a Mac agent update, and the company's marketing now centers on AI governance.

Better than Teramind

  • The deepest capture of any mainstream tool: screen video, keystrokes, email content, file movement and clipboard
  • Rules that block actions in real time rather than report them afterward
  • Self-hosted and government cloud options with an SLA

Where Teramind is still better

  • Its Trustpilot score is 2.7 of 5 across 7 reviews, with support, agent performance and billing the complaints; the sample is tiny
  • The 5-seat minimum and tier structure make it expensive for a small team that wants monitoring alone
  • Dollar prices are not reliably published, and the capture depth creates legal exposure in notice and consent states

Who should switch to it

Security and compliance teams with a genuine insider risk or data exfiltration problem, a legal basis for keystroke and content capture, and the staff to tune the rules. Our employee monitoring software review places it among its peers.

Why people leave Teramind

Teramind's public review footprint is small and the vendor does not reply to its negative Trustpilot reviews. The complaints below are the ones with evidence, each with a fix.

Support that does not answer

Two 2026 reviewers describe support that could not get the silent installer working and a chatbot that could not add an employee; a 2025 reviewer describes emails unanswered while the subscription kept billing.

Its all AI support and I cannot even add a new employee.Trustpilot, one star, July 31, 2026

Fixed by: vendors with staffed US support: ActivTrak, Insightful, Veriato, CurrentWare.

The agent slows machines

Continuous screen recording, OCR and content inspection cost CPU and disk, and a March 2026 reviewer blamed the agent for slowing employees' computers.

The software caused ongoing issues, significantly slowing down our employees' computersTrustpilot, one star, March 30, 2026

Fixed by: lighter agents: ActivTrak (no recording), Insightful (screenshots on demand), Hubstaff, Controlio (recording with a smaller footprint).

Recordings that do not play

Reviewers report recordings captured but unplayable, and the product stopping silently. For a tool bought as evidence, an unplayable recording is a failed audit.

recordings weren't working anymore as in sometimes were taken but you couldn't play themTrustpilot, one star, July 19, 2025

Fixed by: Veriato and Kickidler for screen video with local playback; CurrentWare for screenshots stored on your own server.

Billing while broken

The same reviewers describe continued billing during unresolved support cases and refused refunds.

we continue to be billed for a product we are not using while waiting for a resolution.Trustpilot, one star, March 30, 2026

Fixed by: month-to-month billing or published refund terms: Hubstaff (30-day money-back), Controlio and CurrentWare (annual, but with trials of 14 days on real machines).

More capture than the law or the team can carry

Keystroke logging and email content capture are lawful on company systems under a disclosed policy, but they record personal passwords and privileged communications, and California bars emotion-inferring surveillance from January 1, 2027. Many Teramind buyers wanted productivity reports and got a forensic platform.

Fixed by: tools that record less by design: ActivTrak (no keystrokes, no recording), Insightful, Hubstaff; see our keylogger law guide.

Price for a small team

The 5-seat starting point and tiered pricing mean a ten-person team that wants screen recording pays enterprise rates for features it will not configure.

Fixed by: Controlio Basic $6.67, Kickidler from about $2.75, CurrentWare BrowseReporter $12, Time Champ $3.90 with screen recording and DLP as add-ons.

Which alternative fits

Tools that cannot do what you still need drop out of the top three.

The alternatives in detail

Veriato

Veriato

Insider risk with recording, on your own servers if you want
Runs on Windows, macOS, Android; cloud or on-premises Pricing (October 2026) User Activity Monitoring $18 per user per month billed annually with a 5-user minimum; Insider Risk Management by quote with a 20-user minimum

What it is

Veriato records screens, keystrokes, email, file movement and web activity and scores insider risk from behavior, with on-premises deployment for regulated buyers. It is the closest like-for-like replacement for Teramind's UAM tier.

Better than Teramind

  • Risk scoring across users rather than rule-by-rule alerts
  • On-premises deployment from five seats
  • An established vendor with staffed support

Where Teramind is still better

  • No real-time DLP blocking at Teramind's level
  • $18 per user is above Teramind's entry price
  • Same legal exposure from keystroke capture

Who should switch to it

Security teams replacing Teramind UAM that want the same evidence with a different vendor.

Switching

No migration of recordings; archive Teramind exports and run both through one investigation cycle.

Controlio

Controlio

Recording and blocking for a third of the price
Runs on Windows, macOS; cloud or on-premises Pricing (October 2026) Basic $6.67 and Advanced $9.99 per user per month billed annually (17% off monthly); 5-seat minimum; Enterprise on request from 100 seats; on-premises from 10 users; 14-day trial; licensed per concurrent session

What it is

Controlio records screen video with live view, logs keystrokes and clipboard, tracks apps, websites and files, blocks applications and sites, and reports productivity. It covers the monitoring half of Teramind without the DLP engine.

Better than Teramind

  • Screen recording and keystrokes from $6.67
  • Application and web blocking included
  • Smaller agent footprint

Where Teramind is still better

  • No content inspection or DLP rules
  • Five-seat minimum and annual pricing
  • A smaller vendor

Who should switch to it

Small and mid-sized teams that bought Teramind for recording and blocking and never built DLP rules.

Switching

Install the agent alongside Teramind for a week; no data migration.

CurrentWare

CurrentWare

Modular control you host yourself
Runs on Windows; on-premises or self-hosted cloud Pricing (October 2026) Full suite $20 per user per month billed annually; BrowseReporter $12, BrowseControl $6, AccessPatrol $12, enPowerManager $6; minimum contract $1,440 a year; 14-day trial on up to 10 computers

What it is

CurrentWare sells four modules: web filtering, activity reporting with screenshots, USB and device control, and power management. Data stays on a server you control, which makes it the choice for employers that cannot put recordings in a vendor's cloud.

Better than Teramind

  • Buy only the module you need
  • Data stays on your own server
  • USB and device control at Teramind's DLP tier is here for $12

Where Teramind is still better

  • Windows only
  • No screen video, only screenshots
  • $1,440 annual minimum

Who should switch to it

Employers that want web and device control with their own data residency and do not need video.

Switching

Deploy the server and agents in parallel; export Teramind reports for the archive.

Kickidler

Kickidler

Screen video and live view at the lowest price
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux; cloud or on-premises Pricing (October 2026) Subscriptions from about $2.75 per user per month with term discounts of 10 to 40% for upfront payment; perpetual licenses $126 (time tracking) and $168 (monitoring) per license on a promotion running to October 31, 2026, normally $180 and $240; DLP module $15 monthly or $252 perpetual; volume quotes from 50 licenses; the vendor now trades as KeepActive

What it is

Kickidler records screen video of every workstation with a live multi-screen view, logs keystrokes and produces productivity reports, with an optional DLP module. It is the cheapest way to get Teramind-style recording, with a Linux agent.

Better than Teramind

  • Perpetual licenses: pay once
  • Live view of many screens at once
  • Linux agent

Where Teramind is still better

  • Keystroke and video capture carry the same legal weight as Teramind's
  • Documentation and support are thinner
  • The promotion prices expire

Who should switch to it

Budget-constrained teams that want recording and live view and will manage the legal notice themselves.

Switching

Install and go; no migration.

ActivTrak

ActivTrak

Analytics without recording
Runs on Windows, macOS, Chromebook Pricing (October 2026) Free for 3 users with 30 days of history; Work Activity Tracking $10, Workforce Management $15, Productivity Optimization $17, Workflow $21 per user per month on annual contracts; AI Insights add-on $4; screenshots only via an alarm-triggered add-on

What it is

ActivTrak reports application and website use, focus, utilization, workload and schedule adherence, with no screen recording and no keystroke logging. It is what many Teramind buyers actually wanted.

Better than Teramind

  • No recording, no keystrokes, far less legal exposure
  • Workload and burnout signals
  • Free for three, light agent

Where Teramind is still better

  • No DLP, blocking or investigations
  • Annual contracts only
  • No Linux agent

Who should switch to it

Teams that used Teramind's productivity dashboard and never opened an investigation.

Switching

Uninstall Teramind agents, install ActivTrak; reports begin within a week.

Insightful

Insightful

Analytics with screenshots when you need them
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux Pricing (October 2026) Workforce Analytics $8, Workflow Optimization $12 (beta), Combo $16 per seat per month billed annually; add-ons: on-demand screenshots $4, higher-frequency screenshots $3, screen recording $4; 7-day trial; on-premises from 250 seats

What it is

Insightful records app and website use and attendance with screenshots and recording as add-ons, 24 months of history and per-team controls. The on-premises option starts at 250 seats.

Better than Teramind

  • Recording is an add-on you choose
  • Twenty-four months of history
  • Linux agent

Where Teramind is still better

  • No DLP or blocking
  • Add-ons raise the price
  • On-premises only at 250 seats

Who should switch to it

Mid-sized teams that want evidence available but not continuous.

Switching

No migration; overlap one period.

Hubstaff

Hubstaff

Time tracking with optional proof of work
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Pricing (October 2026) Starter $4.99, Grow $7.50, Team $10 per seat per month billed annually; 2-seat minimum; 14-day trial; 30-day money-back guarantee

What it is

Hubstaff is a time tracker with activity levels and optional, blurrable screenshots, plus payroll and invoicing. It is the lightest tool here and the right answer when Teramind was bought to prove remote hours.

Better than Teramind

  • Lightest agent and lowest legal exposure in this list
  • Payroll and invoicing from tracked time
  • Money-back guarantee

Where Teramind is still better

  • No recording, keystrokes, DLP or blocking
  • Timer-based, so nothing is captured until started
  • Not a security tool

Who should switch to it

Remote teams that wanted hours and proof of work, not forensics.

Switching

CSV import of members and projects.

Syteca (formerly Ekran System)

Syteca (formerly Ekran System)

Session recording and privileged access
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Citrix, virtual desktops Pricing (October 2026) By quote; cloud or on-premises; the pricing pages refused automated access on October 28, 2026

What it is

Syteca records user sessions with searchable metadata, manages privileged access and alerts on risky actions, with deployment on servers, jump hosts and virtual desktops. It is aimed at IT and third-party contractor sessions more than at the general workforce.

Better than Teramind

  • Session recording on servers, Citrix and Linux where Teramind is weaker
  • Privileged access management in the same product
  • Enterprise deployment options

Where Teramind is still better

  • Quote-only pricing
  • Less productivity reporting
  • Overkill for an office team

Who should switch to it

IT security teams whose Teramind use was really about contractors and privileged sessions.

Switching

Enterprise deployment; plan a pilot on the jump hosts first.

DTEX InTERCEPT

DTEX InTERCEPT

Insider risk without screen recording
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux Pricing (October 2026) By quote; enterprise

What it is

DTEX collects lightweight behavioral telemetry (file, application, network and user actions) and scores insider risk without recording screens or content, which it presents as privacy by design. It is sold to large enterprises and government.

Better than Teramind

  • Insider risk detection without the legal weight of recording
  • Lightweight agent
  • Linux coverage

Where Teramind is still better

  • Enterprise pricing and sales cycle
  • No productivity reporting
  • No screen evidence when an investigation needs it

Who should switch to it

Large organizations replacing Teramind for insider risk and wanting to drop content capture.

Switching

Enterprise deployment through the vendor.

Forcepoint Insider Threat and DLP

Forcepoint Insider Threat and DLP

Enterprise DLP first, monitoring second
Runs on Windows, macOS Pricing (October 2026) By quote; enterprise; the pricing page refused automated access

What it is

Forcepoint's DLP with its insider threat module combines content-aware data protection across endpoints, email and cloud with user activity monitoring and video replay for investigations. It is where Teramind DLP customers go when they outgrow it.

Better than Teramind

  • Enterprise DLP coverage across email, web and cloud, not just the endpoint
  • Video replay for investigations
  • Risk-adaptive policies

Where Teramind is still better

  • Enterprise price and implementation
  • No small-team option
  • Heavier than Teramind, not lighter

Who should switch to it

Enterprises whose Teramind deployment was a stepping stone to a full DLP program.

Switching

A DLP program migration, not a tool swap; plan months.

Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management

Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management

If you already own E5
Runs on Windows, macOS, through Microsoft 365 and Defender for Endpoint Pricing (October 2026) Included with Microsoft 365 E5 and the E5 Compliance and E5 Insider Risk Management add-ons; some indicators require pay-as-you-go billing; a dollar figure per user was not read on Microsoft's page

What it is

Purview Insider Risk Management correlates signals from Microsoft 365 (email, SharePoint, Teams), Defender for Endpoint and HR connectors into risk policies and alerts, with Purview DLP to block actions. It records no screens, and it reaches everything a Microsoft 365 tenant does.

Better than Teramind

  • No extra agent and no screen recording
  • Policies built on signals you already collect
  • DLP across Exchange, SharePoint, Teams and endpoints

Where Teramind is still better

  • Requires E5-level licensing
  • No productivity reporting and no non-Microsoft coverage
  • Configuration is a project

Who should switch to it

Microsoft 365 E5 tenants that bought Teramind before realizing what they already owned.

Switching

Configure policies in the Purview portal; retire Teramind agents after the first alert cycle.

Time Champ

Time Champ

Attendance and productivity with security add-ons
Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Pricing (October 2026) Starter $3.90, Professional $6.90, Enterprise $13.90 per user per month billed annually; screen recording, keylogger, project management, HR and DLP as add-ons; trial without a card

What it is

Time Champ records attendance and productivity classification with screenshots per team, and sells screen recording, keystroke logging and DLP as add-ons rather than tiers, so a team pays for the capture it chooses.

Better than Teramind

  • Lowest entry price with recording and DLP available as add-ons
  • Attendance and shifts included
  • Linux and mobile agents

Where Teramind is still better

  • Shorter enterprise track record
  • DLP depth below Teramind's
  • Add-ons priced separately

Who should switch to it

Small and mid-sized teams that want to choose their capture depth and pay for only that.

Switching

CSV import for users and projects; historical data is not imported.

How to leave Teramind cleanly

  1. Export what the record retention policy requires: investigation recordings, alert logs and reports, and store them under the same access controls, because they contain keystrokes and content.
  2. Confirm the cancellation in writing and check for continued billing; the public complaints describe charges during unresolved support cases.
  3. Remove the agent from every endpoint with the silent uninstaller, including machines of departed staff, and verify from the console that no agents report.
  4. Reissue the monitoring notice. Dropping keystroke and content capture is a change employees should be told about, and Connecticut, Delaware and New York require written notice of what the replacement records; our monitoring policy template has the wording.
  5. Delete the data you no longer have a basis to keep. Keystroke logs that include personal passwords are a liability with no purpose once the tool is gone.

How these tools were chosen

Each tool was checked on October 28, 2026 against the same list: what it captures (screen video, screenshots, keystrokes, content, blocking), deployment options, published pricing with minimums and billing cycle, platforms and support model. Teramind's, Syteca's and Forcepoint's pricing pages did not render dollar figures to automated requests, and the Teramind entry price is from our October 2026 review; confirm on the live pages. Quotes are from Trustpilot reviews read the same day; Teramind's profile has seven reviews, which shows themes and not a measured pattern. No vendor paid for inclusion and there are no affiliate links.

Disclosure. I have done work for Time Champ. It appears here because it belongs in this category, it is held to the same criteria as every other product, and its drawbacks are listed like everyone else's.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Teramind?

For insider risk and DLP, Veriato ($18 per user, five-user minimum) is the closest replacement with on-premises deployment, and Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management is the best answer for Microsoft 365 E5 tenants. For teams that only used Teramind's monitoring, Controlio ($6.67) covers recording and blocking and ActivTrak ($10, free for three) covers productivity analytics without recording anything.

How much does Teramind cost?

Teramind's Starter tier was about $14 per seat per month on annual billing in October 2026, with UAM and DLP tiers higher and Enterprise by quote; the seat selector starts at five and annual billing saves about 8%. On October 28, 2026 the pricing page did not render its dollar figures to automated requests, so confirm on the live page.

Is there a free alternative to Teramind?

ActivTrak is free for three users with 30 days of history and no recording. Hubstaff and Controlio offer 14-day trials and Insightful a 7-day trial. No free product offers Teramind's recording, keystroke or DLP features.

Which Teramind alternatives record screens?

Veriato, Controlio and Kickidler record screen video with playback; Syteca records sessions; Forcepoint offers video replay for investigations; Insightful and Time Champ sell recording as add-ons; CurrentWare takes screenshots. ActivTrak, DTEX, Hubstaff and Microsoft Purview do not record screens.

Which alternatives log keystrokes?

Veriato, Controlio and Kickidler include keystroke logging; Time Champ sells it as an add-on. ActivTrak, Insightful, Hubstaff, DTEX and Microsoft Purview do not. Keystroke capture on company devices is lawful under a disclosed policy, but using captured personal passwords is not, and the logs are a liability to store.

Can Teramind be self-hosted, and which alternatives can?

Yes; Teramind offers cloud and self-hosted deployment and government cloud hosting on Enterprise. Veriato, Controlio (from 10 users), CurrentWare, Kickidler, Syteca and Forcepoint offer on-premises deployment; Insightful from 250 seats. ActivTrak, Hubstaff, DTEX and Purview are cloud only.

Does Microsoft 365 include an insider risk tool?

Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management is included with Microsoft 365 E5 and available through the E5 Compliance and E5 Insider Risk Management add-ons, with some indicators billed pay-as-you-go. It correlates Microsoft 365, Defender and HR signals into risk policies and pairs with Purview DLP; it does not record screens.

What should I do with Teramind data when I leave?

Export the recordings and logs your retention policy requires and store them under the same access controls, delete the rest, especially keystroke logs that may contain personal passwords, uninstall the agent from every endpoint and verify in the console, and issue a new monitoring notice describing what the replacement records, which Connecticut, Delaware and New York require in writing.
